Steering gears
There are two popular steering gears used in passenger cars and light trucks:
1.
Conventional
2. Rack and Pinion
1. Conventional gear
(A recirculating ball type gear) used in some rear wheel drive cars, light trucks and full-size vans. A conventional steering gear transfers circular motion to linear motion using an arm (called a
Pitman arm).
2. Rack and pinion steering gear
Usually found in passenger cars, light trucks, mini-vans and small SUV’s. A rack and pinion gear changes the circular motion of the
steering wheel to
straight-line, or linear, motion to the wheels.
Both of these gears can be found in vehicles with manual or power steering. Power steering is the most prevalent system because it reduces steering effort and dampens road noise and vibration.
