Steering Systems Overview
A vehicle’s steering system is made up of:
The steering wheel, which allows the driver to control the vehicle’s direction and is the driver’s link to the wheels.
The steering column, which connects the steering wheel to the steering gear. Usually, there are one or more universal joints, or couplings, in the steering column.
The steering gear, which changes the direction of the motion and gives the driver a mechanical advantage in turning the wheels through gear reduction.
Steering linkage, a series of components that connect the steering gear to the wheels. There are several types and many variations of those types. The specific linkage will depend on the use of the vehicle, the type of suspension, accessories and the area that design engineers have to work in.
