Idler
Arm
Conventional or parallelogram steering systems utilize an idler arm. The idler arm is mounted to the vehicle frame, or
uni-body, to support the right side of the centerlink and keep the steering linkage level. The idler arm is a
"slave partner" to the Pitman arm to turn the wheels. Looseness in an idler arm may cause excessive toe change while the vehicle is moving. Idler arms should be inspected during tire or alignment service. Idler arms and other steering linkage should always be checked with the linkage in its normal running position. Toe is the most critical alignment angle because it
affects tire wear dramatically. Some vehicles have a specification for allowable
movement. Always check the vehicle’s service manual for inspection criteria before inspecting the vehicle. |
