Sway
Bar Bushings/Sway Bar Links
The stabilizer (anti-sway or
"sway") bar reduces body roll and vertical wheel movement. Sway bars are connected to the vehicle body with bushings and to the
suspension system with bushings or bushing links. These bushings and bushing links isolate road noise and shock from the vehicle body.
The inspection process includes a check for loose or missing links. Inspect frame bushings for indications of excess bar movement within
the bushing and large cracks or splits. Also, technicians should look for bushing deterioration caused by heat and engine oil.
Many late model vehicles utilize a sway bar link connector. A sway bar link
connector has been designed to incorporate a ball and socket assembly, much like a tie rod. These links can fail through wear and tear and should be inspected for looseness. Many times a failed sway bar link
connector of this type will cause a clunking or rattling sound. |
